Help Demand Gravel Pit Approval Be Overturned
We are all shocked at the provincial government’s controversial approval of a gravel mine in the area, despite widespread local opposition. The proposed gravel pit, located at 27600 Garnet Valley Road, has sparked serious concerns from residents, businesses, and environmental groups. The District of Summerland and the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen both strongly recommended against the approval due to the potential negative impacts on the environment, infrastructure, and agritourism economy. These concerns were echoed by the BC Wildlife Federation and numerous local stakeholders, including Solvero Wines.
The gravel mine approval threatens Garnet Valley’s sensitive ecosystems, wildlife habitats, agricultural and agritourism businesses, which have collectively and recently invested millions in the region.
“The Minister’s decision to approve the gravel mine is unacceptable to us at Solvero Wines. We are proudly part of the growing Garnet Valley Agri-Tourism Association. Alongside association members, we have worked hard to establish Garnet Valley as a destination – local wineries, farms, businesses, the natural environment, and wildlife will all be seriously harmed if this mine proceeds. Our opposition, along with the loud opposition of Summerland residents, the Mayor, and Council have been ignored with this decision. We urge the Minister of Energy, Mines, and Low Carbon Innovation, Josie Osborne, to overturn this decision, citing the irreparable harm that will be caused to the community,” said Alison Moyes, Winemaker, Solvero Wines.
This campaign is being launched by the Garnet Valley Agritourism Association, we are urging the public to send letters to the provincial government demanding the decision be reversed. We encourage all concerned citizens to visit the website and fill out the automated letter form to send your message directly to the provincial government.
